Building practical software systems

8 September 2026

Notes on keeping software delivery grounded, useful, and maintainable.

Good software starts with a clear problem. Before choosing tools, frameworks, or infrastructure, it helps to write down what the system needs to make easier for the people using it. Practical systems usually grow through small decisions made consistently. A small release, a short feedback loop, and a direct conversation with the person affected by the work can prevent a lot of waste. The best technical choices are often the ones that preserve options. Keep the data model understandable, keep deployments repeatable, and keep the team confident enough to change direction when new information appears.
